Parenteral Nutrition
- Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a specialized form of intravenous feeding used to provide essential nutrients to patients who are unable to tolerate or receive adequate nutrition through the gastrointestinal tract. For premature and critically ill infants, parenteral nutrition is often a vital component of care, delivering a customized blend of glucose, amino acids, lipids, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals directly into the bloodstream. This bypasses the digestive system and allows the body to absorb the required macronutrients and micronutrients for growth and development. Careful monitoring of fluid balance, electrolyte levels, and other metabolic parameters is necessary to prevent complications like hyperglycemia, electrolyte imbalances, and liver dysfunction. Transitioning the patient from PN to enteral (oral or tube) feeding is an important goal once the gastrointestinal tract can tolerate adequate nutrition. Parenteral nutrition is a vital therapeutic intervention for supporting the unique nutritional needs of preterm and medically fragile infants.
